The region
+ MoreMolland is a tiny, remote hamlet on the southern edge of Exmoor National Park, set deep in the rolling hills between South Molton and Dulverton in North Devon.
This is one of the most peaceful and unspoilt corners of Exmoor, where narrow lanes wind between high hedgero...ws, red deer roam the open moorland above, and the pace of life has changed very little over the centuries. Molland is renowned for its exceptional medieval church -- St Mary's -- which preserves a remarkable set of 18th-century box pews, a three-decker pulpit, and a Georgian interior virtually untouched since the 1700s. It is considered one of the finest unspoilt church interiors in Devon.
The village has a traditional pub, the London Inn, and is surrounded by open Exmoor moorland offering superb walking and wildlife watching from the doorstep.
Nearest Services
South Molton -- Approximately 6 miles north. A handsome North Devon market town with a good range of independent shops, cafes, a Tesco supermarket, chemist, post office, and a weekly pannier market.
Dulverton -- Approximately 10 miles east. A small market town on the southern edge of Exmoor National Park with independent shops, a butcher, a chemist, and the Exmoor National Park Visitor Centre.
For larger supermarkets and high street shops, Barnstaple is approximately 18 miles to the north-west and Tiverton approximately 18 miles to the south.
In Molland
The London Inn -- The village pub, at the heart of this tiny hamlet. A wonderfully traditional Exmoor pub serving real ales, local ciders, and simple, honest food in a setting that feels unchanged for generations. The pub has a genuine warmth and character, with flagstone floors, low beams, and a roaring fire. A favourite with walkers, farmers, and those seeking an authentic Devon country pub experience. Check opening times as they may vary seasonally.
Nearby
The Black Cock Inn, Molland area -- A traditional country pub in the surrounding area, serving real ales and home-cooked food. A good alternative for an evening out.
The Poltimore Arms, Kings Nympton -- Approximately 6 miles south-west. A much-loved traditional Devon pub with a loyal following, known for its convivial atmosphere, real ales, and hearty food. Worth seeking out for a genuinely authentic experience.

The Crown Hotel, Exford -- Approximately 10 miles north-east. A 17th-century coaching inn at the heart of Exford, serving freshly prepared food using locally sourced ingredients. Real ales and a good wine list.
Local Produce
South Molton Pannier Market -- Held on Thursdays and Saturdays. Local cheeses, meats, vegetables, and baked goods. Quince Honey Farm in South Molton is also well worth a visit for its local honey and Devon specialities.
St Mary's Church, Molland -- One of the most remarkable churches in Devon. The interior has been virtually unchanged since the 18th century, preserving a complete set of Georgian box pews, a three-decker pulpit, a musicians' gallery, and a royal coat of arms. The atmosphere inside is extraordinary -- stepping through the door feels like stepping back 300 years. The church is usually open during daylight hours and is well worth a special visit.
Molland Moor -- The open moorland above the village is part of the southern Exmoor commons and is home to large herds of wild red deer and free-roaming Exmoor ponies. This is some of the finest wildlife-watching territory on Exmoor, particularly during the autumn deer rutting season (September to October) when the stags can be heard roaring across the moor.
Anstey Gate and Anstey Commons -- From Molland, lanes climb steeply up to Anstey Gate on the open moorland. From here you can walk out across Anstey Commons and West Anstey Common -- vast, empty stretches of heather and grass moorland with sweeping views. This is Exmoor at its wildest and most remote.
Walking from the doorstep -- Molland is surrounded by an excellent network of footpaths, bridleways, and quiet lanes. You can walk straight from the village onto open moorland, through wooded valleys, or along ancient Devon farm tracks. The Two Moors Way long-distance path passes nearby.
Quince Honey Farm, South Molton -- Approximately 6 miles north. A fascinating family-friendly attraction where you can see inside working beehives, learn about the life of bees, and sample and buy a variety of honey and beeswax products.
Exmoor Dark Sky Reserve -- Exmoor was designated Europe's first International Dark Sky Reserve. The remote location of Molland, far from street lighting, makes it an outstanding spot for stargazing on clear nights.
Tarr Steps -- Approximately 12 miles north-east. An ancient clapper bridge across the River Barle, set within a National Nature Reserve of beautiful oak woodland. A wonderful spot for a riverside walk and picnic.
Walks from the Doorstep
Molland Moor -- Walk directly from the village up onto the open moorland of Molland Moor. This is superb, wild Exmoor walking with a real sense of space and remoteness. Large herds of wild red deer are frequently seen grazing on the moor, alongside free-roaming Exmoor ponies. The views south across Mid Devon and north into the heart of Exmoor are magnificent.
Anstey Gate to Anstey Commons -- A short drive or walk from Molland to Anstey Gate gives access to the vast open commons of West Anstey and East Anstey. Wide, empty moorland stretches in every direction -- some of the most remote walking on Exmoor. Allow 2 to 4 hours depending on your chosen route.
Local farm tracks and lanes -- The network of ancient farm tracks, green lanes, and footpaths around Molland offers gentle valley walking through classic Devon farming country. Hedgerow-lined lanes, wildflower meadows in spring, and a deep sense of rural tranquillity.
Two Moors Way -- This 102-mile long-distance path from Ivybridge on Dartmoor to Lynmouth on the Exmoor coast passes through the countryside near Molland. Individual sections make excellent day walks through varied moorland, valley, and farmland scenery.
Tarr Steps and the River Barle -- Approximately 12 miles north-east. A circular riverside walk through ancient oak woodland, crossing the famous clapper bridge. A lovely day out combining a scenic drive across Exmoor with a beautiful walk.
Beaches
North Devon coast -- The stunning North Devon coastline is approximately 40 minutes by car. The golden sand beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde, and Saunton Sands are among the finest in England and are well worth the journey for a day by the sea.
Minehead -- Approximately 35 minutes to the north-east. A wide expanse of sand at low tide, ideal for families. Also the starting point of the 630-mile South West Coast Path.
Porlock Bay -- Approximately 35 minutes north. A dramatic arc of pebbles backed by salt marshes, with excellent coastal walking and views to the South Wales coast.
